    who, what, when, where, why.
That’s what the Fourth Estate strives to provide.
Political agendas account for the subtle differences in the way news is reported.

The examples you give are not considered mainstream.

First of all, Fox News isn’t news at all; it’s nothing more than a propaganda machine for the federal government.
As for CNN, MSNBC, and even the ‘big three’ network news departments, they’re no longer ‘news departments. The bean counters who now rule the major media conglomerates are more interested in profits than they are the responsibility of being part of the Fourth Estate.
Not wince the days of Watergate has the media served as America’s watchdog. Nowadays, the media simply reads the government press release, verbatim, without any skepticism, investigation, or concern about veracity. Today’s media is not objective, inaccurate, and focuses more on sensationalism than ‘real news’ content. Why? Because it’s easier - and cheaper - to do a story about Anna Nicloe Smith’s paternity suit than it is to do an in-depth investigation into government corruption.
Besides, the media is all part of the corrupt system these days, climbing into bed with the government instead of keeping its relationships at arm’s length.
Just like government, the media today is corrupt, self-absorbed, arrogant, and incompetent. -RKO-
